Rhythm Training

Posted by: admin in Untagged  on

This summer, we are are excited to once again do Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) with Peggy Schaefer.  Nicholas either calls her "Aunt Peggy" or "Music Peggy" depending on his mood!  And he really loves going to work on his rhythm. Peggy is absolutely wonderful at what she does.

The best way to describe NMT is that each of us has our own internal body rhythm.  Some days, our internal rhythm is faster than on other days.  The key is to tune into your rhythm and get your body moving accordingly.

When Nick goes to see Peggy, she watches him as he bounces on a big ball, and she sets her metronome to the rhythm that he is creating.  Once he HEARS the beat of his own body rhythm via the metronome, they practice walking to the rhythm, reaching to the rhythm, hitting the drum to the rhythm and even singing to the rhythm.  As his movements begin to sync to the rhythm, his body is much more organized for the remainder of the day, and it lasts for several days.  We did 45 minutes of NMT on Monday afternoon, and not only did he have the "best session ever" according to Peggy, but he's been so organized and in control of his body ever since!  We plan to continue NMT 1x per week for the rest of the summer. We're hoping for better language and more organized typing.

I'll keep you posted on our progress.   I'm attaching a video of Nick doing NMT last summer with Peggy.  It is just so cool.  And if you want to contact Peggy about NMT, she is currently seeing clients in Irvine, CA.  Her website is www.metricmusictherapy.com
